Career Exploration Training for Foster Youth

We are partnering with Chafee Foster Care Independence Program to offer career trainings.

To encourage career exploration and attendance at two-year and trade schools, the Chafee Foster Care Independence Program (CFCIP) and Reach Higher Montana (RHM) are partnering over the next year to offer local career trainings for Chafee eligible youth.

Our Advisors will host six training sessions across Montana to help foster youth explore available education or workforce opportunities after high school using the Montana Career Information System (MCIS). These sessions will be interactive and may include a campus tour depending on the location. Students at each location will be eligible to win a laptop.

MCIS will help the students develop their career goals and corresponding paths; these paths can then be supported with better information on options to achieve the students’ goals.

The six areas we will host 2-4 hour career training sessions are Glendive, Billings, Butte, Kalispell, Great Falls and Missoula. Each location will invite students from the surrounding areas so we can reach as many foster youths as possible.

RHM Staff will work with local Chafee providers to transport youth to the training. There will be resource materials. Incentives for youth will be work related or an activity/tangible item. Some of the career trainings will include invited speakers to talk about their careers. About half of the trainings are occurring on a college campus.

Agenda items will include but are not limited to:

  • Make a career plan – It’s all about the student. Deciding what they like and don’t like, and being open to exploring the possibilities.

  • Discover education options – Montana has many educational options available. Finding the right fit is important for the student’s success.

  • Learn how to pay for educational expenses – Montana foster youth are eligible to apply for the Foster Care Educational Training Voucher (ETV) program, which provides eligible youth with up to $5000 per year.
